Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price said the sales of annual off-road vehicle permits for the 2006 season will begin at 8 a.m., Wednesday, March 29. The price for an annual ORV permit is $150 and the price for an annual self-contained vehicle is $225. The ORV corridor opens April 15.

The seven-Day ORV and seven-Day self-contained vehicle permits may be purchased through the Advance Sales System or in person. The price for the seven-day self-contained vehicle permit will remain at $75, but the price for the seven-day ORV permit has increased to $40. Advance sales for seven-day permits began March 1. Go to the website http://www.nps.gov/caco/activities for instructions.

As in previous years, annual ORV permits may be purchased in person at the Oversand Station at Race Point, Provincetown. No annual ORV permits may be purchased through the Advance Sales System. The number of annual permits sold will be limited to 150 per day, which means that annual permits will be available from March 29 through April 17, at a minimum.

The process

Several traffic management measures are being taken during ORV permit sales to prevent congested roadways. The following vehicle traffic control measures are designed to have minimal impact on general park users’ access to the Race Point area:

*Enforcement of existing laws prohibiting overnight parking (midnight to 6 a.m.) in Seashore parking lots will be enhanced during ORV permit sales at Race Point.

*Race Point Road will be closed to traffic from its junction with Province Lands Road on Race Point Beach Parking Lot from midnight until 6 a.m. to accommodate fair distribution of ORV permits. (An exception will be made for airport traffic.)

*Roadside parking will be restricted in the Race Point area overnight through 6 a.m. to avoid traffic congestion and accidents.

*At 6 a.m., between March 29 and April 17, vehicles will be allowed to access the Race Point Beach Parking Lot via Race Point Road. Upon entering the Race Point Parking Lot, ORV permit applicants will be issued a numbered ticket allowing the bearer to purchase an ORV permit that day. Each day, 150 annual ORV permits will be issued. Permit sales will begin at 8 a.m. Holders of numbered tickets will be assigned a time slot during which they may purchase their ORV permit. For example, holders of tickets numbers 1 through 25 will make their ORV permit purchase between 8 and 9:30 a.m.; numbers 26 through 50, 9:30 to 11 a.m., etc.

Purchasers may wait in line anytime throughout the day and buy their permit after those holding numbered tickets assigned for a particular hour have been served. Or, purchasers may leave the Race Point area after obtaining a number ticket and return that same day to buy an ORV permit during their assigned hour. No person will be sold an ORV permit without one of the assigned numbered tickets. Lost or stolen numbered tickets will not be replaced, and each numbered ticket is valid only for the day on which it is issued.
